SiWave becomes principal member of WiMAX Forum
Ottawa, Canada – Tuesday,
June 10th, 2003 – SiWave Corporation, a developer
of broadband wireless semiconductor technologies,
today announced that it has become a principal member
of the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access Forum (WiMAX) to deliver and globalize the
802.16 broadband wireless standard.
WiMAX certifies and promotes interoperability standards
for broadband wireless access devices using the
802.16 wirelessMANTM specifications. 802.16 is the
first broadband wireless standard from an accredited
standards body (IEEE) that leverages next-generation
technologies to optimize point-to-multipoint (PMP)
fixed wireless networks. The first certified products
are expected to enter the market by mid-2004.
“WiMAX’s efforts are bringing this new
generation of technology to the forefront of the
broadband wireless industry,” said Dr. Henry
Wong, Chief Technology Officer, SiWave Corporation.
“Working with WiMAX, chipset developers will
be able to provide leading equipment vendors with
a flexible and affordable option to ensure the interoperability
of their products. SiWave is excited to be contributing
to the wide scale deployment of 802.16 within this
growing market.”
SiWave is developing fixed wireless burst modem
technologies for PMP broadband wireless access network
architectures. Based on its expertise in ASIC and
modem development, SiWave’s patent-pending
modem technologies will leverage the 802.16a standard
for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communications operating
at 2-11 GHz.
“The success of the broadband wireless market
will be realized through the cohesive efforts of
industry players to ensure the interoperability
of multi-vendor products,” said Margaret LaBrecque,
WiMAX President. “We welcome SiWave to WiMAX
and applaud their commitment to developing technologies
that will advance the globalization of 802.16. The
broadband wireless market will soon reap the benefits
of improved and increased bandwidth access deployments.”
As a member of the forum, SiWave will take an active
role in promoting the initiative. With this membership
SiWave is well positioned to continue its product
development and secure Series A financing.
“We
are happy to be involved in these efforts and
to be working with the industry to promote interoperability
among broadband wireless technologies,”
said Hanni Bagnordi, President, SiWave Corporation.
“As a growing company with an aggressive
development plan, the opportunity to work with
other industry leaders will be tremendously beneficial.”
